Brandon Stosuy has put together a list of his top 40 favorite metal albums of 2011 for his Show No Mercy column over at Pitchfork. This would be noteworthy in and of itself in that Stosuy is one of the most intelligent and genuinely obsessive critics on the metal beat these days (and one of the most so just in general), but it’s also worth checking out for the number of Chicago acts that made his list, including Indian, Atlas Moth, and defending Best Band Name in Chicago title holders Weekend Nachos. Locals the Swan King, Locrian, Russian Circles, and Harpoon all received honorable mentions, but I really expected to see Bloodiest somewhere on the list and they’re nowhere to be seen. Other than that if you want to learn for yourself exactly how good a year metal had in 2011 (hint: it had a very, very good year) this is the place to start. —Miles Raymer
